Hybrid Motorhomes
Pedata RV Center said yesterday in a press release that they were looking forward to selling hybrid motorhomes from Fleetwood Enterprises.
At the 2008 RVIA Show, Freightliner Custom Chassis announced their ecoFRED hybrid-electric chassis which features: increased brake life, improved fuel economy, increased payload capacity and is built with a diesel engine with an electric motor. In conjunction with the ecoFRED announcement, Fleetwood introduced its Fleetwood hybrid motorhome and Winnebago presented its 2009 Winnebago Adventurer, both Class A hybrid motorhomes.
Clint Ethington of Pedata RV Center said in the release that the Fleetwood hybrid was a “new symbol of hope for the industry.” I wonder if the whole industry feels the same.
In speaking with dealers, it is a general consensus that light-weight trailers are becoming more popular but I have had mixed review about the hybrid motorhomes. Some feel that diesel engines are here to stay; others feel the “going green” theme is going to be accepted sooner or later.
I want to know if hybrid motorhomes are going to have a huge impact on the industry. Are the new hybirds going to be a tough sell as it may be harder to get them in stock with current inventory levels? What do you think? Are hybrid motorhomes a new symbol of hope for the industry?

I think this is complete BS. Motor home mfrs should adapt technology that is readily available from engine suppliers or partner with those that have it. There is no need to re-invent the wheel.

“Hooray for Hybrids!” I am one of those “old” geezers that helped put many of the prototype electric and early Hybrid-Electric vehicles on the road. It was these very early technology that has helped put the present day Hybrids on the road to unparalleled success.
From my veiw as a professional Electric Vehicle engineer and developer, I want to tell all who read this blog that there is NO technical reason that a Hybrid-Electric Motorhome cannot be developed and sold at a very competitive price.
Lets all get behind the Hybrid-Electric movement and help push this emerging product along. It can easily set a whole new look and usefulness to the buying public.

Their is is no doubt that Hybirds are the future, but the future is pretty plain in the RV market. Price’s are already high and Hybirds are even more expencive. I think for the next few years the industry should try to put more thought into the hear and now. With such uncertainty in all the markets and lack of bank funding to both dealer and retail customer. The Hear and Now should be the manufacturers focus.
